What we treat Mid back and ribs
Costochondritis
Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). It often causes sharp, localized chest pain that can mimic more serious heart-related issues, making a professional diagnosis essential for peace of mind and effective recovery.
Common Symptoms
Often felt as a sharp, stabbing pressure on the front of the chest wall, mimicking more serious heart-related issues but localized to the ribs.
Localized tenderness when pressing on the costosternal joints where your ribs meet the sternum, usually affecting the upper ribs.
Discomfort that intensifies when taking a deep breath, coughing, or sneezing, due to the expansion of the inflamed rib cage.
How Physical Therapy Diagnoses Costochondritis
Diagnosis begins with a thorough clinical examination. Our therapists use targeted palpation to identify localized tenderness at the costosternal joints and movement testing to differentiate the condition from other sources of chest pain. We assess rib mobility, thoracic spine mechanics, and breathing patterns to pinpoint the exact source of inflammation.
Our Approach to Treating Costochondritis
We utilize a concierge approach that combines specialized manual therapy to improve rib mobility with expert postural correction. Our goal is to address the underlying mechanical stiffness causing your chest wall inflammation, restoring pain-free movement through a personalized recovery roadmap.
Starting Exercises
Stand in a doorway with your arms on the frame at 90 degrees. Gently lean forward until you feel a comfortable stretch across your chest. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat twice.
Lie on your back with knees bent. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Breathe in slowly through your nose, ensuring your belly rises while your chest remains still. Exhale through pursed lips.
