What we treat Neck and headaches

Poor Posture / Postural Syndrome

Proper postural alignment begins with the neutral position of the spine and pelvis. When these core structures are balanced, the weight of the body is distributed efficiently, minimizing strain on muscles and ligaments. Dysfunction in this area often leads to compensatory patterns throughout the kinetic chain, which is why restoring spine and pelvic stability is a cornerstone of our treatment approach.

Upper and Lower Crossed Syndromes

Upper Crossed Syndrome involves muscle imbalances in the neck, shoulders, and chest. It is characterized by 'crossed' patterns of overactive and underactive muscles, typically resulting from prolonged sitting or poor ergonomic habits. Tightness in the upper trapezius and levator scapula crosses with tightness in the pectoralis major and minor, while weakness in the deep neck flexors crosses with weakness in the lower trapezius and serratus anterior.

Lower Crossed Syndrome occurs at the lumbopelvic region. It features a specific pattern of muscle weakness and tightness that leads to anterior pelvic tilt and increased lumbar lordosis. Tight hip flexors and thoracolumbar extensors 'cross' with weak abdominal and gluteal muscles. This imbalance often results in chronic lower back pain and reduced athletic performance due to improper force distribution through the core.

Common Postural Symptoms

Chronic poor posture can lead to a variety of physical issues. Recognizing these early symptoms is the first step toward postural restoration.

  • Neck & Shoulder Pain: Persistent tension and aching in the upper back and neck, often referred to as 'tech neck'.
  • Tension Headaches: Pain that radiates from the base of the skull or behind the eyes due to muscle strain in the neck.
  • Low Back Fatigue: Muscle fatigue and dull aching in the lumbar spine, often worse after prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Restricted nerve signals resulting in 'pins and needles' sensations in the arms, hands, or legs.
  • Jaw Pain (TMJ): Forward head posture increases stress on the jaw joints, potentially leading to clicks and discomfort.
  • Breathing Inefficiency: Slumped posture compresses the chest cavity, limiting full diaphragmatic breathing and lung capacity.

Posture Treatment Approaches

Clinical interventions designed to restore structural balance and alleviate chronic pain.

Our approach to postural syndrome involves a multifaceted clinical strategy focusing on structural correction and functional optimization. Treatment plans are customized to address the specific muscular imbalances identified during our initial assessment.

Strengthens deep neck flexors to correct forward head posture and reduce upper cervical strain.

  • Manual Therapy: Targeted soft tissue mobilization and joint manipulation to reduce restricted movement patterns.
  • Postural Education: Ergonomic assessments and biofeedback to help patients maintain neutral spine alignment in daily life.
  • Therapeutic Exercise: Prescribed movements to strengthen weak phasic muscles and lengthen overactive tonic muscles.
  • Neuromuscular Re-education: Training the nervous system to adopt more efficient movement patterns and static positions.

Postural Exercises & Self-Management

Corrective movement is essential for long-term postural restoration. These selected exercises target common imbalances to improve alignment, reduce strain, and build resilient movement patterns.

Activates the middle trapezius and rhomboids to combat rounded shoulders and kyphotic posture.

Improves lumbopelvic control and restores neutral pelvic alignment to alleviate lower back pressure.
